THE SPICE & SULTAN’S JOURNEY
Description.
A private journey from royal Zanzibar to the fragrant Spice Island
Leaving Stone Town behind, travel into the lush countryside, where another chapter of Zanzibar’s story awaits. Begin by stepping into Zanzibar’s royal past at the atmospheric Hamamni Persian Baths, built for Sultan Barghash in the 19th century. Wander through the cool, timeworn chambers and imagine a very different Zanzibar — one of sultans, Persian influences and elaborate bathing rituals.
Continue on to a traditional spice farm, follow your senses through a world of cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, cardamom, nutmeg and tropical fruits. Touch the leaves, crush the bark, breathe in the intoxicating aromas and taste fruits and spices straight from the source as your guide reveals the secrets behind the island’s famous spice trade.
After exploring the plantation, sit down to a delicious traditional Zanzibari lunch, prepared using the very flavours you have just discovered.
This is more than a visit to a spice farm. It is a journey through two very different sides of Zanzibar — the world of sultans and the island’s extraordinary spice heritage.
